Interface Addons

There are many, many add-ons that are available to help you as you play World of Warcraft(WoW). And, wisely Blizzard set the User interface up so that enterprising people would be able to make alterations to it to provide a different-more personal experience. This is a list of add-ons that I use when I play wow.

The top of this page will have terminology I use in this page to help those who are new to WoW, or those who are only new to terms used by those who have played longer.

I will then explain which ones I use, why I use them, and give a link to where you can find them.

At the bottom of this page will be a brief explanation of how to install them manually for those who are not using the Curse game client. I use Ubuntu GNU/Linux as my perating system instead of windows and the client does not support GNU/Linux, and there are many windows users that choose not to install an application that snoops around in their hard drive so they will need to install these add-ons manually also.

Mob: term used to refer to a single game controlled adversary. The real origin of this term lies with the old text adventure games. There were objects you could interact with, and some of them could move from room to room to follow you or run from you. These were called "M"oveable "OB"jects. Or MOBs for short.

OMEN

As a tank I need to know a couple basic things about what is going on in my party. Primary among them is how much threat/agro I have against a mob and how much threat my party members have against that same mob. It needs to perceive me as a much greater threat than the rest of my party in order for that mob to keep attacking me and not the squishy cloth or leather wearers. Even other plate wearers can't take a continuous beating and still keep their DPS up where they want it to be.

A good reason for DPS group members to use Omen would be to monitor their agro so if their tank is not doing a bang-up job keeping things under control, they will know when they start approaching the threshold where they will grab the agro from the tank and potentially get some special attention from the mob. If it's normal hall trash, this may not be too bad...but if you are all fighting a boss, it could be very unhealthy for you, and then with 1/3 the DPS gone it could go badly for the rest of the group.

Recount

It is also helpful to me as a tank to know how much damage my team members are doing overall. This can clue me in to watch for who may wind up on top of an agro list when I go in to grab a group of mobs. This can be mitigated by marking the mobs with the Skull, X, Square, Moon, symbols so that I am able to direct most of my threat generating abilities on the group is supposed to be going after. A couple minor slaps are good enough to keep the 'parked' mobs turned to me normally, but if one of them turns away I can pretty much guess they will be going after the person with the highest DPS. Knowing who that is helps me to anticipate and keeps damage to my team members to a minimum.

A DPS member would simply want to know what their numbers are against various monster types, how they are doing in groups vs how they are doing in single target, and generally to watch their numbers to make sure they are keeping up with things, or to work on ways to raise their DPS.

Carbonite

This is not the backup service you may hear advertised on the radio. I am not sure who came up with the name first, and they are not related to one another at all.

This is a very major improvement to the game for anyone trying to complete quests, gathering ore or herbs, and just to get around. This is a fairly new add-on that supersedes several other older add-ons; and it does their job better and in a much lighter-weight package. IMHO of course.

The add-ons that Carbonite replaces are Quest-Helper, Gatherer, Atlas, TomTom, Cartographer, plus a few lesser known ones that let you track vendors and such. It even works well in Wintergrasp to track what is going on regarding the towers and such. Well worth the download.

**I got off work at 10:30pm, it's 1am now and I want to play for a couple hours before I need to hit the bet, so I will finish this list monday. Peace!
